Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid), and Morocco’s Yasin Bunu (Sevilla) will compete for the best goalkeeper position in 2022.

On the 8th, FIFA unveiled the final three candidates for FIFA’s best male goalkeeper to be announced at the 2022 FIFA Football Awards in Paris, France, on the 27th. Martinez, Courtois, and Bunu were listed. Courtois won the best male goalkeeper since 2017, and Martinez and Bunu were included in the final three for the first time.

Martinez led Argentina to its first victory in 36 years with a brilliant defense show at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Argentina played penalty shootouts in the final and quarterfinals, with Martinez beating his opponents in a reading contest. Martinez received the Golden Glove, which means the best goalkeeper in the Qatar World Cup.

Courtois led Real Madrid to victory in the UEFA Champions League last season. Courtois especially endured Liverpool’s (England) firepower in the final, allowing no runs and helping to win 1-0. However, Belgium, which includes Courtois, was eliminated from the round of 16 while staying in third place in Group F of the Qatar World Cup. Bunu led Morocco to the semifinals for the first time in Africa, with four runs in seven matches at the Qatar World Cup.

Meanwhile, Germany’s An-Katrin Berger (Chelsea), England’s Mary Earps (Manchester United) and Chile’s Christiane Endler (Olain Peak Lyon) were listed as the final candidates for the best female goalkeeper.
