KATUSA service idol Young K “Got a big lesson and opportunity from the military”
The 8th Army of the United States announced the recent status of Young K (29, real name Kang Young-hyun), a member of the idol group DAY6.
According to the U.S. military on the 21st, Sergeant Kang Young-hyun is serving as a personnel officer (U.S. military specialty code 42A) at the S1 section of the U.S. 8th Army headquarters in Camp Humphreys, a U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
On the previous day, the 8th U.S. Army released the latest news and photos of Young K in the corner “Faces of the 8th U.S. Army,” which selects one of the KATUSA soldiers and introduces it every week.
Young K is said to be in charge of vacation and finance in the S1 section.
He looked back on his work, saying, “I got the opportunity to interact with many different people, and I experienced a lot in the military, not just S1 work.”
It is said that the attitude of soldiers toward separation and life caused him to think a lot.
Young K said, “It’s probably the biggest lesson I’ve learned to be able to continue,” adding, “I’m really looking forward to the life that will unfold in the future.”
Earlier in May, Young K was honored to be selected as the KATUSA’s best fighter at the “Best Warriors” hosted by the U.S. Eighth Army. The best warrior competition is a competition in which soldiers compete comprehensively for physical strength and skills such as eight miles (about 13 kilometers) running, fire extinguisher technology, ground exploration, underwater survival, and obstacle courses for six days.
The U.S. military newspaper also introduced Young K under the title “K-pop Star is selected as the best fighter in the U.S. in Korea.”
Young K began his KATUSA service last October.
“My father was from KATUSA, so I heard good things about him from a long time ago and was recommended by people around him,” he said at a solo album release before joining the military last year. It was a good opportunity,” he said.
Since its debut in 2015, idol group DAY6 has built public awareness by releasing “You Were Beautiful,” “Time of Our Life,” and “Zombie.”
Group leader Sung-jin (29, Park Sung-jin) was discharged from the military in September this year, while members Dowoon (27, Yoon Do-woon) and Won-pil (28, real name Kim Won-pil) joined the military in January and March this year, respectively.
