Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin died on the 30th, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.

Former President Jiang died at the age of 96 at 12:13 p.m. on the 30th (local time) after being treated in Shanghai for leukemia, Xinhua said. Zhang was born on August 17, 1926 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, and majored in electrical engineering at Shanghai Zhaotung University. After joining the Communist Party in 1946, he graduated and studied in Moscow, the former Soviet Union. Jang returned to China in 1956 and worked at factories and research institutes in Changchun, Shanghai, and Wuhan, taking the path of a technocrat.

He served as mayor of Shanghai, China in 1985 and as party secretary in 1987. Deng Xiaoping, who was in a political crisis due to the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, called former President Jiang to Beijing to serve as general secretary of the party. Zhang, who took the post of Deng’s successor, served as China’s president for 10 years from 1993 to 2003. Jang is considered to have put China in the G2 class along with the U.S. while he was in the chair.

However, it was also criticized that former President Jang’s Shanghai network, “Shanghai Bang,” took the lead politically and became an interest group.
